The Department of Polymer Engineering (DEP) was established in 1977 to support the National Plastics Industry, forming a body of experts in Polymer Engineering and lounging a Licenciature Degree in this field.
The DEP has currently a staff of 22 faculty, specialized in different areas of polymer science and engineering, 5 technicians and 4 administrative assistants. It is committed to education, scientific research and technological development, and to the integration of these three branches of knowledge.
In the area of Education, DEP provides training at the levels of Bachelor and Integrated Master's degrees, 2nd cycle Master's degrees and Doctoral Programmes (3rd cycle), nationally and internationally, also offering a set of Specialized Training Courses at the 2nd cycle level.
Scientific research is carried out mostly in two Research Centers, the Institute for Polymers and Composites (IPC) and the Biomaterials, Biodegradables and Biomimetic Materials (3B’s), both integrated in Associated Laboratories of the Foundation for Science and Technology, while maintaining close cooperation with other National and International Research Centers. The research projects are carried out with the collaboration of researchers, PhD students, and postdoctoral researchers. The industrial liaison is performed through an interface, the Pole of Innovation in Polymer Engineering (PIEP), and also directly, or through educational projects (2nd and 3rd cycles) of technological nature.
The DEP’s overall mission is to deliver high quality education projects, recognized nationally and internationally, with a strong concern for technological development, industrial application and integration in the society.
